I think they should ask Skoda to finance the intercontinental club cup between the Stanley Cup and Super Six Euro champions, calls it Skoda Cup as Toyota sponsor the annual Toyota Cup of soccer between European and South American club champions ----------------------------------------------------------------- icing101 Do you have any (brief) info on Avangards Omsk of Russia Super League. Is it the best financed pro hockey club in Russia ? Wealthy enough to hire Ivan Hlinka as coach. I do like all the commercial logos all over the hockey uniform of European pro hockey players, even on the helmet.

Rockies, unfortunately I am not very knowledgeable on the history of Avangard Omsk. I know the club was formed back in 1950. And what a playoff season Avangard just completed (certainly impressive), first defeating Dynamo in a 3-game sweep, then Lada in a 3-game sweep, losing the first 2 games to Metallurg before winning the next 3 (including 2 OT) for the Russian Superleague championship title under coach Hlinka. As far as being the best financed team in Russia, I do not know. But they were able to obtain Oleg Tverdovsky who led their blueline with 16 goals and 33 points. Plus with forwards like Maxim Sushinsky, Pavel Patera, Alexander Prokopiev, Sergei Krivokrasov and goalie Maxim Sokolov, ownership must have deep pockets. And accoring to Sport-Express, Dynamo Moscow has attracted Pavel Datsyuk, Artem Chubarov, Maxim Afinogenov, Alexander Khavanov & Andrei Markov to play for them this season in the event of an NHL lockout. LA Kings Maxim Kuznetsov & Pavel Rosa have already signed with Dynamo. Plus, Andrei Nikolishin and Sergei Berezin have also signed with CSKA Moscow. And several other NHL stars including Mogilny, Fedorov, Jagr & Kovalchuk have expressed interest in playing in Russia this season if an NHL collective bargaining deal isn't worked out. Ak Bars has also just signed goalie Fred Brathwaite as well. Salaries in the Russian Superleague have been rising in the last 4-5 years to the point where it has now become the second highest paid hockey league in the world with top players earning 1 million USD and more. And considering the fact that personal taxes in Russia are much lower than they are in USA and Canada. Many ex-NHLers like Yushkevich, Tverdovsky and several non-Russian players are now choosing to play in Russia. If interested, there are a couple of very good english sites that cover Russian hockey. The Russian Hockey Digest at www.rushockey.com and also www.russianhockeyinsider.com Plus Avangard Omsk official website at www.hawk.ru or in english for standings, results & player stats go to www.hawk.ru/eng.php3If you use babelfish.altavista.com/russian to english free translator, you can convert webpages to english on the official Russian Superleague website at www.phl.ruSorry I could not be of more help.

Winner of the super 6 against the winner of the Stanley Cup?.....this makes me laugh. It is easy, when the best european players are overseas. Even if the super 6 won my Sparta Praha, I don´t care for the game against the winner of the SC. It is like comparing a team from the 1st league with a team from the 3rd league. When the best europeans will come back to Europe, I have nothing against it. Now it is a comedy. What the hell the NHL wants to demonstrate?! .....just my opinion I think it will be like the exhibition games, Tampa Bay held several years ago in Austria. As I remember the results were kinda close. EHL wasn't that profitable for the clubs. As I know about Mannheim, they didn't get enough money to pay the travel costs. Some czechian teams gave their participant spot to other teams. Especially for the german teams it wasn't a very succesful time in the beginnig. There was no limitation for players from foreign countries so they played in a very canadien style. Too much for the referees and so the results coul have been compared to a set in tennis. 7-5 or 8-6 were quite normal results. As I haven't seen an NHL-game so far it would be a nice opportunity for hockeyfans in Europe. We'll see what happens. Robert

During the past 10 years, 6 NHL teams and the 99 Gretzky All-Stars have visited Europe to play various clubs.
This past September, 2003 the Toronto Maple Leafs swept all three games, beating Jokerit 5:3, then defeating Djurgarden 9:2, and shutting out Farjestad 3:0.
Sept., 2001 saw the NHL's fifth trip to Sweden cut short by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the US. The scheduled three game tour was cut back to just one game, with the defending Stanley Cup champ Avs taking on SEL side Brynas, with Alex Tanguay netting a hattrick to lead Colorado to a 5:3 win over Brynas.
Sept., 2000, the NHL returned to Sweden for the fourth time as Vancouver arrived to take part in the NHL Challenge. Vancouver beat MoDo 5:3 in its opening game and then defeated Swedish champ Djurgarden in a thrilling 2:1 overtime with Daniel Sedin getting the game-winning OT goal for the Canucks.
Sept., 1998, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres travelled to Austria, with the Lightning beating the defending EHL champion VEU Feldkirch 4:1, while the Sabres defeated Klagenfurt AC 5:1 behind a pair of Dixon Ward goals.
Sept., 1994, the Winnipeg Jets with Teemu Selanne and Teppo Numminen won every game on the tour in Finland, including a 5:3 win over HIFK and an 8:2 victory over Tappara.
And with the NHL lockout of 1994, Wayne Gretzky and his 99 All-Stars team went to Europe, where they opened with a 7:1 win over Jokerit, then lost 4:3 in OT to Ilves Tampere, the 99ers beat Djurgarden 9:3 and 5:2 win over Vastra Frolunda, they lost to Malmo IF in OT 6:5, and finished with an 8:5 victory over EHC Fribourg.

icing101 I believe Avangards Omsk is controlled by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovitch which also owns English soccer club Chelsea.
