A 12-team would be too huge to organize, that's the problem for weaker nations. At least that's why the IIHF made the system with two parallel 6-team groups which can be organized in one week in one rink.
I would largely prefer a comeback to a 8-team B-pool, it would certainly be more competitive. Unfortunately I can't see this happen - for political and organization-related reasons.

I agree with you.... I get the impression that that IIHF is happy with the 6 group format (so the games are over in a week). That is why I proposed only making the minor change in Div II (splitting into 2 groups vertically instead of horizontally).

I understand why we have 6-team groups. What I don't understand is why they are 6-team groups and not divisions. Making them divisions would make the difference in ability between top and bottom far less, and would stop the 10-0 games that we typically see when the top seed plays the bottom.
