One more thing: I was thinking of making a new poll asking you you'd WANT to win the World Cup..... But then that is almost the same as asking what your nationality is.....

Well, I would want Slovakia to win, but I voted for the Czechs. I think they have a good chance. Canada will play well but being a home team does not translate to much success lately. As for Canadian fans who require a win, that's just very sad. I have been here for 15 years and have not been able to understand why that is so... All around you see political correctness. TV screams that winners are those who never quit and give their best. But in reality, Canadians are very hard on their players. Nagano was a complete disaster. Disaster!!! Why was it a disaster, I dare to ask? Does Canada always have to win? Who, in the eyes of those fans are Europeans? Some guys from Africa who have not seen the puck? What fun would it be if Canada always won?

I also get a lot of s..t for not owning a Leafs jersey but openly promoting Devils. I get typical "what kind of Canadian are you". Well, pardon me, but the Devils are much more Canadian than the Leafs.

Well, pardon me, but the Devils are much more Canadian than the Leafs. No quarrel here.....I was open cheering for Tampa Bay vs Calgary simply because I liked Tampa's offensive first style than Calgary's defense first. I don't pick teams based on which side of the border they lie on.....Heck, I pretty much cheer for whoever is playing against Toronto anyways... Mind you, from what I understand, Leafs' fans are pretty nuts to begin with.... Gurj in Vancouver. p.s. About the Canadians wanting to always win, I think it is a simple case of wanting to prove that something is "ours" because we don't have much else....also keep in mind that being next to a culturally imposing country (USA) it makes us want to hold on to something more tightly. I think the loss to the US in the '96 World Cup hurt the Canadian psyche more than the '98 Olympics - if you look at them separatly - because it was the US we lost to (call it the little-brother syndrome).... I think more people took notice in '98 because it came 2nd in the string of the 2 - when we were supposed to take the reigns back. But if you listen to all the hockey experts most media platforms (TV, radio, and paper/internet) you will see that virtually all of them are giving the rest of the world it's due and trying to explain to the public that the game is a global game now (which I am glad).

Well, pardon me, but the Devils are much more Canadian than the Leafs. i get the same crap for wearing my Finland jersey during international events..which is why ive learned a few choice words in Finnish. i've even been invited to leave the country because in one persons words ..i'm a traitor.. no im just not so brainwashed that i can't form my own opinions. i don't get the all or nothing attitude we Canadians display during these events..i'm of the mind that making it to the medal round is a huge accomplishment considering the calibre of competition out there..why is it we think silver or bronze is shameful? yes its nice to win..but i don't consider less then gold loosing... gurj make your poll you might be surprised by the results we don't all cheer nationally

I agree with you guys. Canada will always be known as the hockey nation and everyone will always be happy if they manage to win with us. But that does not mean that the rest of the world doesn't know how to play and we should walk over everyone with ease. It's an insult towards those other nations and Canadians don't really want to insult anybody. I think we should be very happy that other nations are treating this sport so seriously that they are good enough to compete with us. We don't want hockey to be like baseball, do we? Although I just can't forget the game when Cuba beat US at the Olympics. But, you know... countries aside. I am really, really shocked that Canadians consider it treason to cheer for NHL teams from US. Take Devils or Red Wings... The guys who make the difference in those teams are Canadians. These are our teams. Period!

I obviously cheer for my hometown Canucks (who couldn't - they play offensive:P).
But my favorite all time players are Steve Yzerman, Wayne Gretzky, and Igor Larionov.
Because of Yzerman, the Wings are my 2nd favorite team.
Gurj.

Yes! Stevie is #1. But not only him. Shanahan is a great LW. Overall the management in Detroit is doing a good job. They pay a lot of money to keep the players that the fans like. Toronto doesn't do that. They didn't keep CuJo and what they did to Berezin and earlier to Gilmour and Wendel Clark was just not fair.

The guys who make the difference in those teams are Canadians. These are our teams. Period! I agree that there are many impact players on those teams that hail from Canada -- but they are not the only ones. In no particular order: NJ--Gomez, Elias, Rafalski, Kozlov, Martin (even as a rookie), Langenbrunner, Brylin. Det-- Lang, Datsyuk, Schneider, Hull (dual citizenship I know -- Canadian born), Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Chelios.

Brimsek, of course you're right. And I hope you understand that I was writing with a bit of humour. I just think that if a Canadian loves Gretzky and wants to wear jersey of Oilers, then Kings, then Blues and then Rangers than that does not mean he is a traitor. He still is a Canadian hockey fan! Although not very smart if he actually bought a Rangers jersey...

SuperJ -- my bad. I did catch the humor. After reading my post again -- after yours today -- I realized It sounded like I didn't. I was trying to add to what you said. Sort of like "gee see who else is on those teams?". This is why I shouldn't try to be funny online! Sorry for any confusion. See what you mean about the Rangers!

I personally feel it would be the most fun in the world that i could possibly think of if Canada won each and every time.what can i say,in Canada hockey is our passion,we consider it our birthright,we just can't stand losing in it.We can take losing in anything else with a good amount of grain of salt, but not in hockey.it's just not acceptable and that's the way i like it,it keeps us on our toes. But the pressure on the players is unbelieveable to be sure.
