I don't think this will happen mainly due to scheduling, but it does make for interesting debate. Anyone have any thoughts on this?? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IIHF wants European, Stanley Cup champs to square off[/u][/color] source: CANOE.COM ZURICH (CP) -- The inaugural Super Six club championship of Europe will be played in St. Petersburg, Russia, Jan. 13-16, 2005, and the International Ice Hockey Federation says it hopes eventually to arrange to have the European champion play the Stanley Cup winner to determine world club supremacy. "Many fans are still talking about the great games between CSKA Moscow and the Montreal Canadiens in the 1970s and 1980s and the potential of games like these is even bigger today," says IIHF president Rene Fasel. The 2004 champions of the Czech Republic (HC Zlin), Finland (Karpat Oulu), Germany (Frankfurt Lions), Russia (Avangard Omsk), Slovakia (Dukla Trencin) and Sweden (HV71 Jonkoping) will vie for the first Super Six title in St. Petersburg next winter.

Hey, that would be really interesting, if it ever came true...I hope they´ll manage to fit in the schedules somehow ( and once again, no "thumbs up" smiley ). We had that European Hockey League a couple of years back with teams even from Great Britain , but i guess it was a little too much for the players, cos it was played during their domestic hockey seasons This cup system will be better, won´t it?

And another good thing about "Super Six" tournament is that the participants will truly be the best teams of the season. In EHL awhile back, there were only the teams that had money.
Now, Super Six Winner vs. Tampa... it would be an interesting game to see. A good showcase experiment of that how far behind in skill are the players playing in Europe.
But the real meter would be something else in fact... NHL All Stars vs. Euro leagues All Stars. Of course, this is nothing but a wet dream.

@ laho Correct me if I´m wrong, but weren´t the teams playing in EHL the reigning champs of their national leagues?

Well, if I recall right, Jokerit was there and they were not the reigning champions at that time. Several other clubs from central Europe that had money (but not necessarily any major victories on the latest days) were in too.
Unless I mix it with some other arranged tournament... but I'm pretty certain it was EHL since there's not much of big scale commercial cups... they don't do it around here too often.

@ Laho I must disagree with you on that I´m also pretty sure that Jokerit was the reigning champion back then...and so was TPS in the year they participated EHL. I´m not going to argue this with though

I think there were top 3 teams of the previous season representing Finland.

Winner of the super 6 against the winner of the Stanley Cup?.....this makes me laugh. It is easy, when the best european players are overseas. Even if the super 6 won my Sparta Praha, I don´t care for the game against the winner of the SC. It is like comparing a team from the 1st league with a team from the 3rd league. When the best europeans will come back to Europe, I have nothing against it. Now it is a comedy. What the hell the NHL wants to demonstrate?! .....just my opinion

What the hell the NHL wants to demonstrate?! .....just my opinion I don't think the NHL wants to do this..... The story says the IIHF (i.e. European side) wants to see this. G.

I got your point there, but nevertheless I´d love to see the match between SC winners and Super 6 winners. Besides, I guess the european players might like that too, that would be a great opportunity to show what they´ve got and measure their true skills.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk were the final EHL Champions, winning the title 2 consecutive years. Andrei Razine scored twice in a span of 3:58 between the first two periods and Igor Karpenko stopped all 29 shots he faced against Sparta Praha in a 2-0 shutout win.
The 1998-99 season will be remembered as the best year for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, who completed a Grand Slam by winning all the competitions that the club took part in: the EHL, the regular Russian championship and the playoff series. Particularly thrilling was the EHL triumph in 1998-99, as Metallurg skated to a 2-1 overtime victory in front of 12,000 spectators of the Luzhniki Sports Palace, the temple of Dynamo Moscow.
