Kärpät won games one and two, but lost game three 5-0 in Turku
Kärpät Oulu started game two of the Finnish finals against TPS Turku where they left in game one; two fast goals. First goal was scored by Brad Smyth and the second by Vladimir Machulda. Two goals were enough and Tuomo Karjalainen replaced Teemu Lassila as the TPS goalie. The switch seemed to work and TPS started dominating the match and David Schneider scored for TPS just minutes later. TPS continued their good play and Kai Nurminen tied the game in the second period. Kärpät goalie Niklas Bäckström had 28 saves in the first 40 minutes.
Niko Mikkola looked like the hero for TPS, giving TPS a 3-2 lead in the third period, but Machulda scored his second of the match and took the game to overtime. TPS lost their dominance and goalie Karjalainen had to make some big saves until Brett Lievers ended the match after 72 minutes of play.
At this point things were looking excellent for Kärpät. While TPS goalies made mistakes, Niklas Bäckström looked solid and his team had three opportunities to win the championship.
Game three took place in Turku and TPS started strong, Niklas Bäckström had 17 saves in the first period, but only Kai Nurminen was able to score for TPS. Jani Kiviharju made it 2-0 for TPS in the second and the third period decided the match for TPS with two goals from man of the match Antti Aalto and one from Kimmo Peltonen.
TPS worked hard and Kärpät wasn't able to put goalie Lassila to a real test. 5-0 was a strong showing of skill from TPS and makes game four extremely interesting.
Despite their loss, Kärpät still has two opportunities to win the championship. The next game will be vital for them, as it will be played in Oulu. Losing this match might be too much to overcome and TPS will be hard to beat in game five.
The series is now 2-1 for Kärpät and game four will be played in Oulu on Sunday.
