The 28th World Junior Championships (WJC's or U20) is fast approaching (two weeks) and will this year take place in Finland for a record 5th time. We might as well use this event to create a little Christmas trivia. No presents to the winner (you will hopefully get plenty on the 24th or 25th). Here's 10 quick questions 1. During the past 27 championships, the host nation has only won the gold medal four times. When was the last time and which country won the World Championships? 2. During the history of the WJC's, there has only been one time when Canada and Soviet Union/Russia failed to earn a medal. In what year? 3.What was the specific reason that neither Canada nor Russia won any medals that year (tough one, I know ) 4. So let's take an easier question: Who was given the award as the best goalkeeper at the WJC's in 2003? 5. OK, let's stick to goalkeeper questions: Which of the following five keepers was never given the award as best WJC goalkeeper: Jose Theodore, Ed Belfour, Dominik Hasek, David Aebischer, Robert Luongo? 6. This year, many hockey scouts expect a 17 year Russian kid named Alexander Ovechkin (remember that name!) will dominate the games. The last time a similar thing happened was in 1978 and his name was Gretzky. How many points did Gretzky score in the 1978 WJC's? 7. In 1993, Peter Forsberg claimed the leading scorer title, scoring a staggering amount of points. In 7 games, how many points did he score? 8.Peter Forsberg is obviously the all time leading scorer, but who is the all time top scorer? (and with how many goals?) 9. Who, then, is the all-time single season top scorer?(not the same person) 10. In the past 27 years, only 8 countries have won medals at the WJC's Which country has never won any medals: Switzerland, Slovakia or Germany? Provide your answers, and remember: no editing (or you will be disqualified). The one with most correct answers will win this year's title as

Oh wait, I wanted to choose the Czech Republic, and chose Canada by mistake. I think the Czechs will win in Finland and the Canadians in Prague...

OK, when I read Pihinalle's answers, I thought: this just underlines my point that the WJC's is a best kept secret in Europe (even more so as Pihinalle is Finnish, and Finland host the next WJC's in two weeks). But when I read Sammy's...hmmm...then. Well, Sammy, as the University teacher I am, I demand that you go do your homework when you get time off during Christmas. You will be surprised when you get the answers. I am sure that they will stimulate greater interest in the WJC's, and that was the educative purpose of the trivia. Btw, Denmark does not participate, so I have decided to vote for Russia. With Ovichin they will win for the third year straight. Believe me.

I have to agree with you DanCan, I got lazy with my answers there. Not much thought went into it. Mind you there isn't much grey power above my shoulders to think with anymore anyways. ;D

The biggest reason why I know so little about WJCs must be my age. Second reason is that my interest to junior hockey has existed about four years.

Terrible answers Ok, here are the answers: 1. During the past 27 championships, the host nation has only won the gold medal four times. When was the last time and which country won the World Championships? Correct answer: Finland (Helsinki), 19982. During the history of the WJC's, there has only been one time when Canada and Soviet Union/Russia failed to earn a medal. In what year? correct answer: 1987. 3.What was the specific reason that neither Canada nor Russia won any medals that year (tough one, I know ) correct answer: Neither team medalled because they were both disqualified after a brawl during the final game of the championship - at that point, midway throug the game, Canada was leading 4-2. The Canadians needed two more goals to overtake Finland on goals differential. When the tournament directorate disqualified the brawlers, Finland was automatically world champions.. 1 point to Sammy. 4. So let's take an easier question: Who was given the award as the best goalkeeper at the WJC's in 2003? correct answer: Fleury (of course)5. OK, let's stick to goalkeeper questions: Which of the following five keepers was never given the award as best WJC goalkeeper: Jose Theodore, Ed Belfour, Dominik Hasek, David Aebischer, Robert Luongo? Correct answer: Ed Belfour6. This year, many hockey scouts expect a 17 year Russian kid named Alexander Ovechkin (remember that name!) will dominate the games. The last time a similar thing happened was in 1978 and his name was Gretzky. How many points did Gretzky score in the 1978 WJC's? correct answer: 17 (8 g, 9 a)7. In 1993, Peter Forsberg claimed the leading scorer title, scoring a staggering amount of points. In 7 games, how many points did he score? correct answer: 31 points (7 g, 24 a), or something like 4.5 points on average!8.Peter Forsberg is obviously the all time leading scorer, but who is the all time top scorer? (and with how many goals?) Correct answer: Pavel Bure (1989-91), 27 goals9. Who, then, is the all-time single season top scorer?(not the same person) Correct Answer: Markus Näslund (1993), 13 goals10. In the past 27 years, only 8 countries have won medals at the WJC's Which country has never won any medals: Switzerland, Slovakia or Germany? Correct answer: Germany. 1 point to Pihinalle FINAL RESULT: Sammy 1, Pihinalle 1, All others 0. This means that there will be no this year.

I guess I'm getting old DanCan, it was in 87 that Canada and Russia were kicked out of the tournament. It didn't seem that long ago.

Hey, Sammy. You posted another correct answer at the very same moment as I posted the answers. What do we do about that? OK, you are going to be the this year. I'm sure that your kids will be happy. (btw, your second win out of three this year).

If you could have held off for another few minutes, I had the answers for 6, 7 and 10 sitting here also. Yep, I get to be again this year. Oldest daughter wants money (imagine a college kids needing more money), second eldest wants, yep you guessed it, money. Hard to put gas into that vehicle of hers when shes not working and still going to high school. 3rd stress factor wants a game cube and the young guy wants a hand held metal detector so he can find rare and exotic coins that other people have dropped. I asked my wife for a french maid, but for some reason I don't think I'll get one. ;D
