The top 16 InLine Hockey teams from all over the globe will converge on Bad,Tölz, Germany, from July 10-17 for the 2004 IIHF World InLine Hockey Championship.
Among the 16 participating teams are the Scandinavian powerhouses of Finland and Sweden, which have played in the gold medal game twice in the last two years. Finland took home the gold last year, while Sweden won in 2002.
Overall, five continents are represented as Team USA, which has earned a medal in six of the previous seven championships, represents North America. Argentina, and Brazil hail from South America, while Chinese Taipei and Japan are the Asia representatives. Rounding out the teams are Australia and New Zealand and nine European teams.
The sixteen diverse countries will compete to determine who will be crowned the InLine Hockey World Champion at both the Top Division and Division I levels.
This year's championship will feature the same playing format as the 2003 World Championship with two key changes. First, there will be a qualification game the day before the championship begins between Chinese Taipei and Belgium to determine which team gets the 16th and final position in the tournament. Second, this year three teams will be relegated instead of two.
For the second consecutive year, the championship will be played in a two-in-one format with the Top Division Championship and the Division I Championship combined during the week-long event.
The top eight teams are in Groups A and B, while the next eight teams are in Groups C and D. The two last-placed teams from Groups A and B and the two first-placed teams of Groups C and D play a qualification game for the right to participate in the Playoffs of the Top Division. Hence, the Division I teams have a chance to move up into the Top Division during the Qualification Game.
After the Qualification Game, the tournament will again be split into two parts as both a Top Division and Division I World Champion will be crowned.
