Correct me if I am wrong. I looked at the World Cup website and it seems to me that not only the preliminary round but also the quarterfinal round are done in separate pool, not cross-over as I thought. Whoever finish first in European pool will have the easiest road to the semi-final unless Olaf Kolzig gets hot and Germany advances while in North America if Russia can play up to their potential, it would be tough to advance for all four teams. It is the most competitive international competition ever, in my opinion, every country except Germany has a chance to win the cup, especially whoever comes up with the best goaltending

Hey Rockies....
That is correct, they are no crossing over until the Semi-Final stage, this way the can keep more games (actually 2) in Europe before they all have to come over.
so, if E = European pool and N = North American pool we have this:
Quaterfinals 1.) E4 at E1 (at home country of E1) 2.) E3 at E2 (at home country of E2)
3.) N4 at N1 4.) N3 at N2 (Note: US will get their game in Minnesota - no matter where they finish).
Semi-Finals winner of (1) vs winner of (4) winner of (2) vs winner of (3)
then Finals

Don´t Team Slovakia and Team Russia get a kind of advantage over the other european teams by playing in NA pool ? They won´t have to travell across the Atlantic in the middle of the tournament and they´ll be playing all their matches in small rinks ? Or am i totally wrong here...?

>>Don´t Team Slovakia and Team Russia get a kind of advantage over the other european teams by playing in NA pool ? I suppose that is an advantage, but probably somewhat compensated for by the lack of fans for both teams in North America. (although I'm guessing Slovakia will have quite a few fans against Russia when they play in Ottawa

Yes, agreed on that home game argument...but my point was more the travelling part...and adjusting from a large rink to a small one...

Actually, one point needs correcting:
All the games will be played on the smaller sized rink - including the games in Europe. The rinks will be modified just like they were in the 1996 World Cup.
As for travel - That might be a bit overrated - I think the European pool starts off a couple of days earlier than the NA pool anyways, so they will have a 2-3 days rest when they come over.

That's a very important point and I'm glad you made it! I was wondering about that myself.

Also, the jet lag is worse going from west to east, rather than east to west. Last time I flew to San Francisco on business, I had jet lag for a day whilst out there. Felt rough for nearly a week when I got back home.

Graham has a point here. I guess it is easier to adjust to stay up later than to adjust to get up earlier. I hate waking up every morning!
