(CP) - Centre Scott Gomez of the New Jersey Devils was named to the World Cup team for the United States on Wednesday, replacing centre Jeremy Roenick of the Philadelphia Flyers. Roenick suffered a broken jaw and a concussion when he was struck with a point shot during a game last season and missed 20 games before returning in March and playing in the playoffs although few believed he was at 100 per cent. "We are disappointed Jeremy will not be able to play in the World Cup of Hockey although we certainly respect his health concerns and we wish him and his family the best," U.S. team GM Larry Pleau said in a statement. "We're thrilled to be able to add a player with the abilities of Scott Gomez. It was a difficult decision to not select Scott to the initial roster, but there were some very good players not named. He'll be a quality addition to the team." Gomez was a surprise omission when the U.S. named its original 26-player roster May 20, but some suspected it was payback for him declining to play in the world hockey championship in Prague this spring. The 24-year-old tied a career-high with 70 points (14-56) last season while recording a plus-18 rating in 80 games. The native of Anchorage, Alaska, played in two world junior championships in 1998 and '99.
