TORONTO (CP) - Stanley Cup ratings continue to rise in Canada and struggle in the U.S.
CBC's broadcast of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final between the Calgary Flames and the Tampa Bay Lightning drew 3.450 million viewers. That makes Monday's game, a 1-0 Tampa win, the second-highest rated Stanley Cup final game ever for the network. Only Game 7 of the 1994 final between Vancouver and the New York Rangers drew more, with 4.957 million tuning in to watch the 3-2 Rangers win.
Last year's Game 4 between New Jersey and Anaheim drew 1.56 million viewers.
Apart from Game 2, the ratings have steadily gone up for this year's series.
Game 1 of this year's final attracted 3.063 million compared to 2.811 million for Game 2 and 3.135 million for Game 3.
It's a different story in the U.S. Games 3 and 4 on ABC drew two of the lowest overnight ratings since American networks began carrying the Cup final in 1998.
Game 3 got a 2.2 rating, the lowest since 1998. Game 4 got a 2.8, which tied last year's Game 3 between New Jersey and Anaheim for the second-lowest since 1998. Overnight ratings measure the 55 largest TV markets in the United States, covering about 70 per cent of the country. A ratings point represents 735,000 households.
The ratings for the first two games on ESPN were anemic, with Game 1 tying for the lowest-rated Cup game on the cable network since 1990.
The record audience for a sporting event in Canada, with more than 10 million English and French-language CBC viewers, was the Canadian men's gold medal hockey win over the U.S. at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.
