TORONTO (CP) - While CBC's Stanley Cup ratings continue to soar, they're bottoming out in the United States.
Thursday's Game 5 drew 3.515 million Canadian viewers, making Calgary's 3-2 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Lightning the second-highest rated Stanley Cup final game in the network's history. Only Game 7 of the 1994 final between the Vancouver Canucks and the New York Rangers drew more, with 4.957 million tuning in to watch the 3-2 Rangers win. Last year's Game 5 between Anaheim and New Jersey drew just 1.504 million viewers.
Apart from Game 2, the ratings have steadily gone up for this year's series. Game 1 attracted 3.063 million compared to 2.811 million for Game 2 and 3.135 million for Game 3. Game 4 drew 3.450 million viewers.
The U.S., ratings, however, paint a different picture.
Games 3, 4 and 5 have the lowest average since broadcast networks began carrying the NHL finals in 1998.
Thursday's game drew a 2.5 rating, one of the lowest since 1998. The Flames lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.
The rating is the percentage of all homes with TVs, whether or not they are in use. Share is the percentage of homes with TVs in use.
The ratings for the first two games on ESPN were anemic, with Game 1 at 1.1 tying for the lowest-rated finals game on the cable network since 1990. Game 2 was only slightly higher at 1.2
