Here are some quotes that crystallize the problem with hockey in markets like Tampa Bay:
"First the Super Bowl, now this,'' patron Ben Brinkofski of Bradenton said. ``This really put us on the map.''
"People in places like Detroit and other Northern cities are edgy and they live for the team,'' he said. Around here, you've got a lot of other things to live for.''
I'm sure there are some hardcore Tampa fans, and the city enjoys the publicity and glory of the win, but in other markets, the Stanley Cup matters the most.

Hey, that´s exactly how we europeans feel when Canada wins the World title! It´s so unfair, cos the most canadiens don´t give a damn about the Wold Championships.

I found an interesting story on www.hockeycanada.ca about the viewership for the final game. Since it was on a Sunday, there wasn't work to contend with. "TSN's coverage of Canada's 5-3 come-from behind win over Sweden in yesterday's gold medal game from Prague was the highest rated IIHF Men's World Hockey Championship game ever on TSN with a total national audience of 1,142,000 viewers* to both the live and encore broadcast combined (live at 2:30 p.m. ET - 963,000 viewers; encore at 7:30 p.m. ET - 179,000 viewers). " "Audience levels peaked at 1,087,000 viewers during the final 30 minutes of the game from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET. With an additional 128,000 viewers watching the gold medal game live on RDS, a total of 1,270,000 Canadians watched Canada win its second straight World Hockey Championship title" Another interesting stat: "TSN is available in eight million households." That's not bad in terms of viewership.

That's not bad in terms of viewership. Not at all. And considered the time it was played.. Sleeping is overrated, it's easily replaced by hockey Some World Championship playoff games here beat the 1,500,000 viewers limit -> 30% of Finns watching (well, + the ones watching it in the bars or at someone else's tv) edited the numbers, checked it from the official statisticsWorld Championships final 2001: 2,032,000 ;D

Well, here are some numbers for comparison:
"In Canada, the game (SLC 2002 Gold Medal) was the most-watched TV program -- sports or otherwise -- in the country's history. An average of more than 8.6 million people (more than a quarter of the population) were tuned in at any given moment to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.'s telecast of the game."
"The previous record for a TV audience in Canada was the 6.7 million who watched Game 6 of the 1992 World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves."
Are the Game 7 ratings for Calgary - Tampa Bay out yet?
I read somewhere else that CBC's Vancouver - NYR Game 7 SC final in 1994 was 4.97 million, and somewhere else I read over 3 million.

The Toronto Star has info about Game 7 of CGY-TB:
"Monday's actual game broadcast was watched by 5,560,000 viewers, 156,000 more than the 1994 seventh game."
"an average audience of 4,862,000 viewers per minute, making it the second highest NHL rating ever on the CBC. The broadcast of the 1994 Game 7 between Vancouver and the Rangers was watched by 4,957,000. However, those figures include the post-game show"
A lot of viewers didn't stick around for the post-game show (me included)

"Monday's actual game broadcast was watched by 5,560,000 viewers, 156,000 more than the 1994 seventh game." If you ever had that kind of numbers watching the World Champs, we wouldn´t be so bitter over you winning the title...
