DOH! I was holding out a remote hope that Shanny would play in Ottawa. Realistically, he'd probably sign with the Leafs first anyway

Red Wings re-sign Shanahan, Hawks sign Cullimore Thursday, July 22, 2004 Detroit Red Wings left wing Brendan Shanahan celebrates a goal in this 2003 file photo. (AP File/Alan Mothner) The Detroit Red Wings re-signed veteran winger Brendan Shanahan on Thursday, retaining one of their core players. Shanahan, from Mimico, Ont., agreed to a one-year deal plus a player option for a second year. The Wings decided not to pick up Shanahan's $6.5-million US contract option June 30, making him an unrestricted free agent. But Shanahan only spoke to the Wings since July 1 and proceeded to negotiate a less expensive deal. Financial terms were not released but reports indicate the 35-year-old's new deal is worth between $3.5 million to $4 million a season. Shanahan had 25 goals, 28 assists, 117 penalty minutes and a plus-15 rating in 82 games last season, his eighth with the Wings. Elsewhere Thursday, defenceman Jassen Cullimore left the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, signing a three-year, $7.5-million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks. "Jassen Cullimore is a big, steady, stay-at-home defenceman who definitely improves our defence," Blackhawks assistant GM Dale Tallon said in a release. "He is one of the biggest defencemen in the NHL and was a member of the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning last season. He is a solid veteran who logs a lot of minutes against the other team's top players." The 6-5, 244-pound Cullimore had two goals, five assists and 58 penalty minutes in 79 regular-season games last season. He also added two assists and six penalty minutes in 11 playoff games. "I'm very excited about coming to a city like Chicago that has such a great hockey tradition," Cullimore, 31, said in a statement. "The situation in Chicago right now reminds me a lot of Tampa Bay three or four years ago. We turned things around there. "We brought in some veterans who helped out our younger players with their experience and leadership. Personally, I've been through a lot in my career and I feel that I can help a young team like the Blackhawks through the experiences I've had." The Hawks have been busy on the free-agent market this summer, also signing Matthew Barnaby and Curtis Brown. In other moves: - The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to a one-year, $600,000 deal with tough guy Jesse Boulerice, avoiding a salary arbitration hearing scheduled for Aug. 5 in Toronto. Boulerice, 25, had six goals and 127 penalty minutes in a career-high 76 games last season. - The Colorado Avalanche re-signed forward Dan Hinote to a one-year, $770,000 US deal and also signed free-agent minor-leaguers Brett McLean and Andre Savage. - The New York Rangers re-signed defenceman Karel Rachunek. The 22-year-old had two goals and 19 assists in 72 games with Ottawa and New York last season. link: www.canada.com/sports/hockey/story.html?id=45E5566B-0781-4EB4-A4F8-A3E48B370625

Tanguay signs deal for $4.25M By Adrian Dater, Denver Post Staff Writer, July 23rd, 2004 Alex Tanguay finally cashed in big with the Avalanche, the team announced today. The NHL all-star left wing signed a one-year, $4.25 million deal, a marked increase from the $1.5 million he made last season. Tanguay, 24, scored 25 goals and had 79 points in 69 games last season for Colorado. Before a late-season knee injury, Tanguay was in the hunt for the NHL scoring title. Tanguay had filed for NHL salary arbitration last week, but he had until Aug. 1 to continue negotiating with the Avalanche toward a new deal. Avalanche right wing Milan Hejduk also filed for arbitration, but has yet to sign with Colorado. Tanguay had a difficult time in the playoffs, as the knee injury limited him to playing eight of Colorado's 12 games. He scored two goals, with two assists. Despite his still tender age, Tanguay will enter his sixth season with the club. link: www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~84~2290992,00.html
