Coyotes are making a serious bid for unrestricted free agent Brett Hull Wednesday, July 28, 2004 PHOENIX - The Coyotes have made a two-year contract offer to Brett Hull, says the Arizona Republic. Bobby Hull Jr., the player's brother and agent, told the newspaper the offer is generous and he feels Phoenix would be an excellent fit. Coyotes GM Mike Barnett used to be Brett Hull's agent, and managing partner Wayne Gretzky is a former teammate. "I got to say, knowing Brett as a brother, and knowing his relationship with Mike and Wayne, and the roster and style of play, I think the fit is excellent for Brett," Bobby Hull Jr. told the newspaper. Said Barnett: "We've put our best foot forward. It's what we can afford. Only Brett can determine if it's efficient." Brett Hull turns 40 in August. He earned $5 million US with Detroit last season. He's third on the NHL's all-time goals list with 741 including 92 the last three years as a Red Wing. link: www.canada.com/sports/hockey/story.html?id=4DFECE62-BA4E-46AC-B53A-11A2DCB822AE

Blackburn, out all of last season with bad shoulder, re-signs with Rangers NEIL STEVENS Thursday, July 29, 2004 - - Dan Blackburn is beginning his bid to regain a full-time NHL job.
Blackburn, 21, who was an instant sensation when he joined the New York Rangers at age 18, missed all of last season with an injured left shoulder. He agreed to terms of a new contract Thursday and he'll put on the pads in his home city of Montreal on Saturday to begin a camp with Rangers goaltending coach Benoit Allaire.
"It was exceptionally challenging," agent Mark Hall said of his client's time away from hockey. "He loves to play the game so it's not easy not to be able to."
Blackburn was Canadian major junior goalie of the year with his Kootenay, B.C., club in 2001 and was New York's first pick and 10th overall in the draft that year.
He became only the fourth teenage goalie in league history to make more than 15 consecutive starts, made 31 starts in all and was named to the NHL all-rookie team. He made 32 appearances in his sophomore pro campaign.
Then he hurt his shoulder.
Mike Dunham started most of the Rangers' games last season, while Blackburn wondered during his slow recovery if he'd ever get back between the pipes. He had nerve exploration surgery last March 31.
He's worked hard during rehab.
"He's on the ice, stopping pucks and feeling good," said Hall. "He's been working on his technique and we're approaching the future in the best way possible.
"He wants to be the best he can be and has his eye on the target."
Blackburn's new deal is for $825,000 US next season, down from $1.13 million US last year.
The Rangers also signed David Liffiton, 19, of Windsor, Ont., who spent the last three years with the OHL's Plymouth Whalers.
Elsewhere:
- - Right-winger Justin Williams agreed to a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The 24-year-old native of Cobourg, Ont., established career highs for games played (79), assists (33), points (44) and penalty minutes (64) in his fourth NHL season. He was on Canada's gold-medal team at the world championship. Carolina acquired him from Philadelphia on Jan. 20 for defenceman Danny Markov.
"Justin is one of the young players we anticipate will play a significant role on our team," said GM Jim Rutherford. "He has demonstrated that he can develop into a top-level NHL player."
Williams earned $1.073 million US last season. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed.
- - Braydon Coburn, a WHL all-star with Portland and Atlanta's first 2003 draft pick, eighth overall, signed with the Thrashers.
Coburn, 19, a bruising six-foot-five defenceman, was a member of Canada's team that won silver at the world junior tournament last January, and he was captain of the under-18 team that won the 2003 world title. GM Don Waddell indicated he feels Coburn is capable of stepping directly into the NHL.
- - Chicago Blackhawks re-signed defencemen Steve Poapst and Stephane Robidas and forward Jason Morgan and signed free-agent forward Rene Bourque.
- - Jocelyn Thibault's new one-year deal with Chicago is worth $3.1 million US - roughly the same amount he got last year when he missed most of the season.
"He had arthroscopic surgery to clean up some of the scar tissue on the hip this summer," says agent Bob Sauve. "He should be ready for the start of the season."
- - The Detroit Red Wings locked up one of their key young skaters, signing forward Jason Williams to a one-year contract. Williams, 23, had 13 points (6-7) in 49 games as primarily a checking forward with the Red Wings last season.
- - No terms were disclosed when Colorado signed LW Alex Tanguay last week but it has since come out that the one-year deal is worth $4.25-million US. He made $1.5 million last season.
- - Tom Fitzgerald, who got $900,000 US in Toronto last season, took a pay cut to $625,000 US next season in agreeing to a two-year deal Wednesday with Boston.
- - Florida Panthers reduced the costs of single-game tickets in four of 10 pricing categories, representing more than 9,000 seats. Included are new $8 US game-day tickets in the upper bowl that will be available at the box office only on game days.

June acquisition Radek Bonk signs three-year contract with Canadiens Friday, July 30, 2004 MONTREAL - Radek Bonk has signed a three-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens, GM Bob Gainey announced Friday. The Czech centre spent all of his previous 10 NHL seasons with Ottawa, scoring 152 goals and assisting on 247 for 399 points in 689 games. The Senators had no interest in retaining him at his 2003-2004 rate of $3.5 million US so they discarded him in June to Los Angeles for a third-round draft pick. The Kings then flipped him to Montreal with backup goalie Cristobal Huet for goalie Mathieu Garon and a third-round draft pick. Bonk, 28, had 12 goals and 32 assists last season. Terms were not disclosed. link: www.canada.com/sports/hockey/story.html?id=13559BA9-C014-491F-A6B9-F097EA7E7150

Veteran defenceman Chris Pronger re-signs with Blues for $10 million US Friday, July 30, 2004 ST. LOUIS - Chris Pronger has re-signed with the St. Louis Blues in a one-year deal worth $10 million US. The six-foot-six defenceman's salary will be equal to the $9.5 million US he got last season and he'll get an added $500,000 signing bonus. Pronger, 29, the NHL's most valuable player four years ago, was second among all defencemen with 54 points including a career-best 14 goals last season when he averaged 27 minutes 27 seconds ice time. The league named him to its second all-star team. The native of Dryden, Ont., will be a key player for Canada in the World Cup of Hockey tournament, Aug. 30-Sept. 14. In 11 NHL seasons, Pronger has 94 goals and 306 assists for 400 points. The Blues declined to negotiate a long-term deal several times in the last year, says the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Maybe there is something down the road that makes sense for both sides to do something long term," GM Larry Pleau told the Post-Dispatch. "We don't know. "We don't know what's to come (with a new collective bargaining agreement). We'll just take it one step at a time and see what we can do." link: www.canada.com/sports/hockey/story.html?id=49F052EF-CFCA-41A4-8710-C3356BF41130
