Wasn't it in 1979??
I recall a series where a group of NHL All-Stars played either Team USSR or the Red Army Team (basically the same thing). 3 game series with them splitting the first 2 and then the Soviets cruising to a 6-0 victory in the last game, played in Madison Square Gardens.

Gurj, you're the man! I'm impressed. That's absolutely right. Let me know if you happen to be in Latvia at some time - couple rounds of beer (or vodka or both ) definitely on me. I have been following NHL/Canadian hockey since I was 9. Pretty difficult task from behind the iron curtain by the way.

Gurj in Vancouver.

Hi Gurj, You're perfect again The only things to pick up information about the NHL in Soviet Union in seventies were rare articles in Soviet press and annual Super Series around New Year between two best Soviet Teams (usually CSKA/Sov.Army and Krylia/Sov.Wings) and various NHL teams (eight games each series) which were shown on Soviet TV. Although the total balance was in Soviet favor they never managed to win the current Stanley Cup holder. The first Canada Cup in '76 showed the real rankings of that time. The Lone Latvian Helmuts Balderis (the idol of all Latvian boys who played hockey; not to confuse with our Gang fellow from Sweden ) debuted for the Soviet Team that year. He scored in Challenge Cup as well and finally played in NHL in '90 (Minn. NS) at the age of 38. NHL and WHA coverage improved every year since '76 fall and I continued to follow it. Occasionally my old man who taught me basic English acquired some American newspapers (which was not quite legal) so I got more hockey-educated. In '98 I got a job in Silicon Valley and spent next 3.5 years there. So the dream to visit an NHL game live came true. I attended about twenty of them in San Jose, Nashville and Denver. Now I'm back home because I am as crazy as other normal Latvians who love their country Oops, gotta get back to work - we have 10 hours difference...

Thanks, EveB! Nice links. I just found one game missing in the list on www3.telus.net/worldcuphockey/nhlvsussr.htmlRed Army 1 @ Philadelphia Flyers 4 on 01/11/76 (Tretiak/Stephenson) That was an impressive game. Clarke, Leach, Barber, and especially Dave Schultz were at their best. Da Crazy Latvian
