He had a good weekend. We were short two players, so he got moved from center to wing and then double shifted for most of the tourney. He loves the extra ice time.

Sammy Jrs update. Just got back from Winfield (top team in our league) and came away with a convincing 5-3 win. Sammy Jr popped in the 4th and 5th goal for us midway through the third. The kids are starting to play like a team.

Lost another today 3-1 against a strong Eckville team. ( they haven't been beat this year yet). Sammy Jr spent 4 minutes in the penalty box. (both for body contact) I guess I have to teach him that he is not allowed to run over the players on the other team yet.

I was talking with the coach last night.(team meeting and Christmas drinks in a truck as we watched the kids skating) and Sammy Jr. has found a new home. They moved him from center to left wing on his line. It looks like a good move as his point production has really taken off and he's starting to play with a bit of an edge that we didn't see earlier in the year. He likes to fight it out in the corner and wants to play full contact hockey which isn't allowed here for 2 more years for him. Stats to date first 8 games as center 2 goals 7 assists 0 penalty minutes last 5 games playing left wing 6 goals 6 assists 8 penalty minutes (6 for body contact, 2 for slashing) point total 8 goals 13 assists for 21 points in 13 games. 3rd on the team in goals, first in assists 3rd in penalty minutes and leads our team overall in points. Gotta love the enthusiasm of the kids on the team this year. We played yesterday at 9:45 AM with the game ending at 12:00. We changed the kids out of their equipment and headed over to one of the outdoor rinks where 9 of the 11 kids that were at the game played shinney from noon until 3:30 PM. One of the hockey moms went home home and cooked 24 hotdogs up and bought a 12 pack of Pepsi and brought it over to feed the kids out of the back of her truck. Four of us hockey dads sat in a truck sipping on brandy and talking as we watched to make sure no one got hurt. The kids could hardly move they were so tired when they finally got off the ice. At 6:00 PM they opened up the arena for publc skating and 6 out of the nine kids showed up there to skate a bit more. Finally got the kid home at 8:00 PM. He was hungry (again) so I fed him again and he was falling asleep while eating. 8:30 PM in bed and out. Nothing like hockey to tire a kid out.

The kids managed to win another today by knocking off Forestburg 6-4. Sammy Jr. only got one assist. They had him playing defence as we only had 10 kids show up for the game.

Found out last night that we are going to be short one player for the rest of the season. One of our defencemen broke his ankle Christmas day when he was out sledding. I was wondering why he wasn't at the game yesterday. Pretty good group of parents to work with this year. After every Saturday game we all get together in the evening and have a few drinks and let the kids play together doing something other then hockey. I think its really bringing the kids together as friends and as a team. We have a skating party planned for late February. One of the fathers lives on a farm and has a dugout that he is grooming for that day. The kids and parents can play shinney together. We'll have a fire going and hotdogs and drinks for everyone. We also are looking into getting some horses in to do a sleigh ride for the kids. Lets hope we get some snow and that the weather cooperates on that day.

It all sounds like great fun ... for the kids and for the parents. And you must be really proud of how well he's playing!
Ok, one question ... what's a "dugout"? Clearly, you don't mean a canoe.

A dugout is a big hole in the ground we use to trap water in when the snow melts in the spring. You'll notice them all along the roads in western Canada as they used the dirt in road construction and just left the holes there. They are usually about the size of a hockey rink and catch water from melting snow and rains throughout the year. In the winter it of course freezes and instant hockey rink every 5 miles or so down the roads.

Next game is Saturday afternoon in Olds, Alberta. The kids should win this one if they play half decent. We are hitting the easy part of our schedule and should be able to put a few more games in the win column. Record to date 2W-5L-1T in League play 3W-2L-1T in exhibition play Sammy Jr's record to date 8G-14A in 14 games

The kids came out playing terrible yesterday and were down 3-0 by the end of the first. They fought back to make it respectible, but still lost 5-2. They should have beat this team.

4-4 tie game against Delburne today. Sammy Jr was held pointless for the second game in a row. Had one breakaway and managed to hit the goalie in the face mask. He said he was trying for the top shelf glove side, but I really think he wanted to see if he could do some damage. We out shot them 43-15, their goalie was incredible.

Gotta like it. Sammy Jr. playing basketball today at school managed to break his pinky finger. He was worried that his hand wouldn't fit in his hockey glove.

The finger seems to be doing ok and he's all ready for the game on Saturday. He practised last night with the broken finger and it didn't seem to bother him too much.

Had fun yesterday. The game ended up being postponed as we had rain of all things falling all day. First time in my memory that a hockey game got called because of rain. Needless to say, it wasn't even safe to walk outside let a lone drive. Skating would have been easier. The police in town banned driving IN TOWN at 7:00 PM. Most highways in our area were closed also. 6 kids showed up from the opposing team, so we lent them 3 from our team and let them scrimmage for awhile. We already had the ice and refs paid for, so we thought we might as well let the kids have some fun. It took me 15 minutes to drive home from the arena. All 7 blocks.
