So he can play in the NHL, but can´t play for his team at the World Cup? It is really ridiculous. The NHL is really how to say it politely......... special. He doesn't play in the NHL he plays for HIFK.

Hm, Berg, but no Niinimaa?
Still, a very good team though.

The Finnish hockey union will do all they can so that Karalahti would be allowed to play in the cup. He did quit his drug rehabilitation program in the US and came back to Finland, but instead of just getting it on and playing, he went through the rest of the program here on home soil, and even suffered his two-year banning from ice, despite the fact our league would have allowed him to play even earlier.
So practically only mishap Karalahti committed was that he didn't go through the program in that place he was originally assigned to, but wanted to go it through in Finland.
I don't think that this should be the thing that prevents him from playing. But if it does, the reason is that NHL doesn't want anyone avoiding the ban by returning back to the national league... but however it is, I must tip my hat for Karalahti who showed some backbone by not using the "back door".
If Jere isn't allowed to play, he will be replaced by either Petteri Nummelin, Janne Niinimaa, Antti-Jussi Niemi or Toni Söderholm... this is just my prediction, but somehow I think Niinimaa has the biggest chances.
And about Berg, he's useless on big ice... but this tournament is played on small ice, keep that in mind. Berg is not that miserable on small ice, but I still say there had been better choices.

Small ice and NHL-rules. Niinimaa should be a lock. He's played something like eight years in NHL. And Summanen didn't pick him. Tsk tsk.

Sorry, of course you are right Brimsek39. I had a confusion of names. I mistaked Karalahti with Lehtinen. Finnish names are hard to remember. It seems t ome lie that at least 2/3 letters in a finnish word are just wovels. And many are even doubled.

No apology! He did play in the NHL -- I thought maybe you were thinking he still did.

What right does NHL have to prohipt Karalahti to play? I find it very personal, if you use alcohol or not. Drugs are different thing. NHL lovest to act GOD!
Body-czech: Too many wovels in Finnish language? Maybe yes, but what about Czech language then!? You seem to missed all wovwls and turned them to consonants, or what would you say over this sentance: STRC PRST ZKRZ KRK! ;D (tarkoittaa suomeksi muuten että tyrkkää sormi läpi kurkun!)

Just curious:
Is (or was) Karalahti even in consideration for the team?

Karalahti WAS in the Finnish Roster, but then the phone on Summanen's desk rang and some big wig behind the Atlantic told him to leave Jere out of the papers.
Now the Finnish hockey union is doing all they can to convince the NHL officials that Karalahti really isn't in a situation that would prevent him from playing...

This Karalahti case should be clear. He was suspended from playing hockey because he didn't do what NHL wanted. He HAS served that suspension. Now they say he can't play. What the ****?!!
I have read many good arguments on this case. Karalahti doesn't have a criminal register concerning this matter. Dany Heatley did NOT get a suspension from NHL when he drove that terrible accident with alcohol in his blood. There are several players with almost similar situation and without suspension.
Once again we come to a conclusion: If Karalahti was from Canada he would be allowed to play.

Terve pihinalle! I must correct one of your points: According to the police in the state of Georgia (where the accident took place), there was negligible alcohol in Dany Heatley's blood - i.e. alcohol was not a factor. Also, Todd Bertuzzi is Canadian and he is not getting any special treatment either when you consider that both he and Derian Hatcher (USA) are suspended and Hatcher is allowed to play in the World Cup. Take a look at the story in the following link: inthockeygang.proboards23.com/index.cgi?board=worldcup&action=display&thread=1085856557I would change your conclusion to "If he were American...." Cheers! Gurj.

You can't deny that it's easier to be a Canadian player than European, can you?
My point is that Karalahti hasn't committed any crime here, but is still treated as a criminal.

Well, 'bout other matters, in majority of the other WC roster threads, people have brought up their predictions about who is going to captain the team...
So what's your take on Team Finland?
Then again, I can understand why it hasn't popped up in this thread, because I have the feeling there is just one name everyone's going to say.

Well, there's left to speculate who will have "A"s Probably Jokinen and Selänne.. Although I'd like to see Peltonen here instead of Selänne.

No, Selänne isn't getting an A. He isn't exactly the type. My takes are Peltonen or Jokinen for the other A. Jokinen more seemingly out of these two.
And if you didn't know, it's a tradition that at least one of the three letters will be worn by a defender... there is only two names worth mentioning here. It's going to be Numminen or Timonen.
