Why is Vancouver not active in the market? Answer: they are, but unlike other teams their perspective is not myopic. Here's the story: TSN, Canuck's Burke not panicking

Today, two new teams joined the bidding efforts to land the defenceman. Dallas is reportedly interested in both Gonchar and Witt, but its unclear with what/who Dallas is willing to trade. Boston are also interested in Gonchar. According to Boston Globe, Bruins have already made substantial offers, including Sergei Samsonov and a 1st round draft pick. Toronto is apparantly willing to trade Nik Antropov and Carlo Colaicovo - two of its few young talented players - plus a possible draft pick to get Gonchar. And New Jersey Devils might be willing to give up last years 1st pick Zach Parise - star of the WC U20's. According to the rumour mill, New Jersey leads to contest. So the thing I have been expecting for some time has come to pass. The Avalanche have traded Martin Skoula to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for some lowbrow neanderthal "gritty" defenseman, Kurt Sauer. It is very disheartening to see such a thing happen. Hockey, as a game of breathtaking skating and skill, is dying. When a great skater and passer such as Martin is let go for a just another mucker you know the problems in hockey are here to stay. When the ignorance and prejudice of a few bandwagon fans who did not appreciate Martin's quiet and reserved behaviour are allowed to influence the make up of our team it is time for me to question my loyalty and support of this team. My only hope is that The Ducks will not try to make Martin into something he is not and use his skills to the best advantage. He is not Rob Blake, Ray Bourque, Darius Kasparitis, Bryan Marchment, Derek Morris or any of the guys who were brought in and placed in front of him in the depth chart. pushing him back year after year. Some say he had a bad attitude...some say he was not committed to the team, I say he was treated shabbily for years and never given the opportunity to excel, only passed over in the depth chart by the next new defensive addition. Pierre Lacroix brags all the time about our home grown players and how we build from within. That may be true in some areas but not in this one. Martin Skoula who's biggest fault is that he is quiet and shy by nature was never given the responsibility and opportunity to become the dazzling defenseman he has inside him. May he get that chance in Duckland. I wonder sometimes if Lacroix has an issue with Czech players...he has traded away Vrbata, Nederost and now Skoula and replaced them with (gag, puke, hurl) "gritty players. If I hear one more radio or TV announcer say that The Avalanche has now gotten more "grit" I will absolutely scream. What happened to the skilled, fast skating, and high scoring team we were promised? We have become like all the other sell out teams who place defense and obstruction above the beauty of the game, all to the great detriment of hockey. Win at any cost??? Sorry, the price is too high.

Blah ... I hate to see Lang go to Detroit. I love Lang and would rather see him with Flyers or Blues, two teams I prefer to the Wings.
