League play stats for Sammy Jr's team 5W-8L-2T
Tournament play Stats 5W-3L-2T
Sammy Jr's points 12G-22A-in 25 games played. He's not doing too bad this year. His game, especially in the defensive zone has really picked up since Christmas. His attitude seems to have changed, where if a goal is scored against his line, he seems to take it as a personnal insult to himself. Yesterday against Red Deer, they scored against his line to start the second period, right off of the face off, to tie the game at 1. The coach left Sammy Jrs line out to take the face-off after the goal. Sammy Jr got the puck off of the draw, walked around 2 Red Deer defenders and drove a slapshot from the dot over the Red Deer goalies glove. A highlight reel goal to put us up 2-1 and it really seemed to inspire the team. The next line out went down and scored on a pretty passing play that seemed to really take the wind out of the Red Deer team. After that, the kids just sat back and took care of the lead. Red Deer only recorded 5 more shots the rest of the game as our kids played keep away. Sammy Jr scored his 2nd goal of the game early in the 3rd to put us up 4-1 with Red Deer getting one with about a minute to play to make it interesting.

Sammy Jrs team is winding down for the year. With 3 games left in the season they are sitting in 8th place out of 15 teams. The top 7 teams play for the championship banner and the bottom 8 play for the consolation banner. These banners measure about a meter by a meter and are hung in the winning teams arena. If we remain in the bottom 8, (we have a pretty good chance of moving to the top 7 if we win all 3 remaining games) we would play 3 more games. If we win those three games, we would have to win 4 more to win the banner. Our objective this season was to finish in the middle of the pack in our league and to bring these kids together as a team. We knew we were in for a rough year because we have the by far the youngest team in our league with 10 first year Atom players and only 4 second year players. The next closest team to have that many first years is Olds with 4 first year players. Our kids realy bonded as a team at the Leduc tournament as the last threads of being a "me" player instead of a "team" player seemed to go by the wayside. Nobody messes with one of the players on our team without a team mate there to stick his nose in and see what is happening. They are a team on and off the ice and its good to see. These 10 kids will be playing together for most of their hockey career in this small town, and with the addition of the 2 first year players that are playing on the Atom A team this year, (Sammy Jr. is on the Atom B team) we should be able to move the team up into the Atom AA group. This represents the best hockey in this age group in the province. I guess only time will tell, but the future looks bright for this group. Today at 1:30 PM Sammy Jrs team vs Blackalds.

After the win yesterday, it puts us in pretty good position to take a run at finishing in the top 7 in our league and play for the championship banner. We are sitting 1 point behind the 6th place team with 2 games left. We play the 13 and 14th place teams while they play the 1st and 14 place teams. If we can win both with them losing one of their 2 games (which is quite possible) we should be able to make it into the top 7. This would far excede our expectations for this team this year. 2 more wins would also put us at 8-8-2 for the year as we'd hit the .500 mark.

Sammy Jr's team had a good showing again yesterday knocking off the Delburne team 6-1. Sammy jr 1g 1a. He's just rolling along. Delburne is known around the league as being one of the roughest teams and when you play in their rink, a penaly call is hard to come by. At the end of the first period it was a 0-0 tie with our kids back on their heels and the Delburne team coming on strong. When the kids hit the ice for the second oeriod, they were a completely different team then left in the first period. They came out hitting and soon it was a run away. The right winger on the second line was first to strike on a break away. Then Sammy Jr. popped one into the net on a nice passing play. He had a wide open net to shoot at. At the 3 minute mark of the second Sammy Jr fed a cross ice pass to the other winger who scored to make it 3-0. By the time the 10th minute of the second rolled around, we were up 5-0 and were working on the defence and trying to get our one defenceman (who doesn't have a goal yet) his first goal of the season. At the 10:00 minute mark of the 3rd we scored again to make it 6-0. Delburne responded at the 18:00 minute mark of the 3rd with a power play goal. Record in league play. 7-8-2 for 8th place Sammy jrs points 14g-25a in 27 games(this include tournament play)

Nope, one more game to go. Heres how it works from here on out. Camrose's record 8-8-2 6th place 18 games played Blackfalds record 7-8-2 7th place 17 games played Warriors record 7-8-2 8th place 17 games played Top 7 teams make it into Championship round. Its possible for all 3 teams to end the season with a 8-8-2 record. If it comes to this, they go by goals scored vs goals against to figure out the final positioning. We have to win the final game and beat the team we play by 6 goals to ensure us a playoff spot. If Blackfalds loses or ties their game, and we win we're in. If Blackfalds wins, we have to win by 6 goals and Camrose would be knocked from 6th place to 8th place and out of the playoff round. Nothing like leaving it to the last game to decide.

I was just looking over the standinds and it appears as if 5 teams could end up with the identical 8-8-2 record. The formula for figuring out who goes into the championship round is gf/gf+ga which leaves us out of the championship round as of today. We have to hope Blackfalds loses their game and we win or we win by 7 or more goals which would put us ahead of Camrose and in 6th place.

The kids came out playing hard today and beat the Rocky team 6-2. I'm afraid it was too little too late as they finish in 8th place.

The kids managed to win the first game of the playoffs by a score of 7-6. We were up 5-1 with 2 minutes left in the 2nd period and the other team scored twice to make it 5-3. We were up 7-5 with 2 minutes left when the other team pulled their goalie. They scored with 51 seconds left to make the game 7-6, but the kids were able to hang on to get the win. Sammy Jr was held off the score pad completely. First time in a while.

Second game of the playoffs goes today at 10:00 AM. We've beaten this team twice and tied them once this year. I hope the kids aren't too overconfident and come out skating the way they can.
