Second game of the playoffs are in the book and Sammy Jrs team skated away to a 7-5 win. Sammy Jr had 2 assists this time out. He's hurting a little bit today. He took a slash across the wrist half way through yesterdays game and took a slapshot off the same wrist blocking a shot at the start of the third period today. A little black and blue right now, but some ice should help it out. Next Sunday is the third game in the first round of playoffs. The team we played today is officially gone from the playoffs as they lost their game yesterday also. The worst we can do now is 2nd place in our pool, so we're insured a spot in the semifinals.

Took Sammy Jr to the hospital and had his arm x-rayed. No break, just a bad bruise. He just got the splint off his finger 2 weeks ago from when he broke it earlier and now a bruised up wrist. No luck at all this year.

Hey Sammy,
hope Jr. is getter. Is his injury so bad that he'll have to stay off the ice next weekend?

Are you kidding DanCan. He was out to practise on Monday night like nothing ever happened. He made me ice it down and then wrap it in foam and put tape it on and away he went.

Just checked our standings on the website and we're off to the second round of playoffs (semi finals). The game this Sunday is just for pecking order. If we win or tie, we finish first in our division. If we lose, we finish second, with the top 2 teams advancing. Not sure of who we play in the semi finals yet, but should know by next Monday. Our goals this year for the team were to be in the middle of the pack in our league (accomplished) and to get the kids playing as a team (accomplished), so anything from here on out is a bonus.

I don't know about that Dancan, as I've said before, if the kids get good enough to play in a beer league when they are 30 years old, thats all we can hope for. They are here to learn competiveness and team work, two of the major factors they will have to contend with when they are older and in the work force. I don't believe any of these kids have the natural ability or drive to become professional players, but they are having fun and thats what its all about. If they learn some life skills, thats a bonus.

I am not so much thinking about the future career of your son, although I off course cross my fingers. What is interesting about this thread is that it tells a story of a Canadian father's devotion to hockey and his son. Let's drink a Girlie Beerâ„¢ to that, although I recognize that it's still quite early in Alberta.

Heck Dancan, I just finished my toast and eggs and you're talking Girlie Beer already. My outlook on hockey is shared by most fathers in our area. Hockey is a game and the kids are supposed to have fun playing games. Let them have some fun. If one makes it past minor hockey to play on an elite team, so be it, but fun is stressed above everything else. My parting words to the kid in the dressing room before a game. "Skate hard, have fun and treat them a little rough.". Parting words before a game by the coach to the kids in the dressing room, "Never give up." What more could you ask for.

We should have some fun Friday night. The team had some left over money from the tournament we hosted and we decided to spend it on a Red Deer Rebels vs Lethbridge Hurricanes game for the kids. We talked the management of the Rebels into front row seats as well as being the featured team for the game. Row 1 seats 1 through 14 for the kids and row 2 seats 1 through 14 for the parents. Not only that, during the game the kids get zoomed in by the cameras and featured on the videotron. Just got the tickets last night at practise.

The kids had a blast at the Rebels game. The Subway restaurant brought them free submarine sandwiches half way through the game. Big bowls of ice cream only $2.00 each and their faces pressed against the glass at center ice for 60 minutes. What more could a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds want. Not only that, the Rebels won 4-1.

Thanks Marrella, I'm sure the kids will do fine today. This is not that important of game for us as we already are insured a place in the semi finals. This one is just for bragging rights. We played this team the last weekend in December and beat them with only a goalie and 8 skaters, so the kids are pretty confident. If we win we place first in our pool and play a 2 game total point series against the second place team in the other pool. If we lose, we finish second in our pool and play a 2 game total point series against the first place team in the other pool. If we beat this team and the 3rd place team beats the 4th place team, they could be eliminated from the playoffs, so they will be playing hard today. Sammy Jr. arm is doing fine. Swelling is gone with just a 3 inch purple mark left. He says it doesn't hurt, but I think I'll wrap it for the game today anyways.

Off to the next round of playoffs. Another close one today with Sammy Jrs. team winning by a score of 7-6. Sammy Jr 1g, 2a. for 5 points so far in the playoffs. Kids are really on a roll going 8-1-1 in the last 10 games.

The score makes it look a lot closer then the game really was yesterday. Sammy Jrs team was the better team and most of the game was spent in the oppositions end. We had a 2 goal cushion for most of the game with a late goal being scored to make it 7-6. The center on Sammy Jrs line is on fire right now with 8g 3a in 3 games. Sammy Jr is sitting in 4th place right now for points gotten during the playoffs.
