Off to the next round of playoffs. Just got the schedule last night and it looks pretty promising for our team. We play a 2 game total goal playoff this Saturday and Sunday. We've only met this team once during league play and beat them 4-3, but it was one of the worst games our kids played all year, so things are looking good for us to advance to the finals.

Our schedule was changed. Our first game goes today at 2:00 PM with our 2nd game going at 6:30 Monday night. Its a 2 hour drive to get there today and it looks like its snowing again, so I hope it clears by the time we leave.

So this means that Sammy Jr's team can afford to lose by a margin of four goals tonight? And then what?

Yep, the kids can afford to lose by 4 tonight and still win the semi finals. We would then play the winner of the other series which is the 2nd place team in our pool against the 1st place team in the other pool. If we win that series, we take home the banner to hang in our arena. We were the better team yesterday and carried the play most of the game. Shots on goal were 39 to 21 in our favor and the score could have been 10-1 if the goaltenders for them hadn't played as well as they did. Sammy Jrs goals came from a scramble in from of the net that he banged in and a wrist shot from the slot that he put in under the crossbar. He had 2 other really good chances, one the goalie got his glove on and the other was a wide open net that the defenceman dove across and took the shot in the helmet. Next game 6:45 tonight at home.

Ouch, the kids came out flying tonight and embarrassed the other team giving them a 9-1 thrashing. Total goals in a 2 game series 15-2 in our favor. Sammy Jr had 1g, 2a in the game. 12 of the 14 kids on our team registered at least 1 point. Just 1 defenceman and 1 forward held off of the score pad. A good team effort. Shots on goal 53 to 19. Off to the finals next weekend and hopefully we'll have a new banner in our barn.

The kids came out skating, but the opposition scored first. It brought back memories of the US Canada game. Our goalie made a routine stop and then cleared the puck. Unfortunatley it hit our defenceman in the shin pads and rebounded into our net to give the opposition a 1-0 lead. We managed to tie it up but it was only 1-1 going into the 2nd period. Shots on goal 11-4 in our favour. The kids came out a little flat in the second and the opposition poured it on. At the 10 minute mark it was still a 1-1 game with shots on goal at 15 to 14 in our favour. Then the kids started to pick up the tempo a bit after one of our defencemen pinched in and fired a nice wrist shot over the goalies glove. His first goal of the year and it really lifted the kids. By the end of the 2nd we were up 4-1 and out shooting them 17-11 in the period. I'm not sure what the coaches said in the dressing room between periods, but the kids came out on fire for the 3rd. They scored 5 goals on 25 shots while only allowing the opposition 4 shots on net. We were in their end most of the 3rd period and just peppered their goaltender. Total shots on goal 53-19. 12 of the 14 kids on the team registered at least one point. Our goalie even had 1 assist. Scoring by position. Centers - 4 Left Wing - 1 Right wing - 3 Defence - 1 8 different goal scorers. Sammy Jrs point total 4g 8a for 12 points in 5 games in the playoffs. Good enough for 3rd on the team. The team is now 9-1 in their last 10 games. Off to the finals.

Sammy Jr is having a good year. He has accumulated 18g, 35a for 53 points in 33 games. 2 games to go then we can pack away the skates for a few months and bring out the Lacross racket.

I hope the kids play better today then they did in their 3-2 win. We started off great going up 3-0 at the end of the second period, but the kids got a liitle over confident and almost ended up losing it. I hope today they'll settle down a bit and play the way they can. Not near aggressive enough going into the third period. They sat back and protected the lead rather then staying skating. Sammy Jrs line started the scoring for us after a scramble in the corner in our end. Sammy Jr ended up with the puck and skated it out to our blue line. He hit the right winger with a cross ice pass. The right winger tapped it up to our center as he flew by and he beat the goalie with a backhand on the breakaway. Nice play. Our 2nd goal wasn't near as pretty as it was banged in by our 2nd line left winger on a scramble in front of the net. Our third goal was our 3rd line left winger making a nice pass to our center in the slot. Wrist shot beat the goalie 5 hole. Both goals against were from scrambles in front of our net. Anything our goalie saw yesterday, he stopped. It was probably the best game he played all year. Shots on net 27-23 with Sammy Jrs team on the short end. We were out shooting the 19-16 at the end of the second. Centers -2 goals Left wingers - 1 goal. 9 of the 14 kids recorded a point. Sammy Jrs point total 18g, 36a for 54 points in 34 games.

Well, the last game of the year is in the books and there is no new banner in our arena. The kids lost by a score of 7-4 today which makes the total 9-7 for the series. We were up 2-1 at the end of the first, but came out flat in the second. We only registered 5 shots on net as our team was swarmed most of the period. At the end of the second we were down 6-2. We came back a bit in the third outscoring them 2-1, but it was too little too late. Sammy Jr had a good game with 2g, 1a, so I really can't fault him on his play. 20g, 35a for 55 points in 35 games, a good year by any standards. Only one tear was shed by a player on the team at the end of the game and it was by one of the 10 year olds on the team. He was sad because he moves up to the next level (Pee Wee) next year and the rest of the team stays in Atom.
